I am a BOI and a product of Galveston Schools. I graduated from Ball High in 1990 and immediately began attending the University of Houston Main Campus. In 1994, I graduated and was fortunate to return to Galveston and become a part of GISD’s extraordinary teaching team at Weis Intermediate at the time. In the Fall of 1997, I received my 1st Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a Specialization in Bilingual and ESL from U of H Main Campus. At the time, I also transferred to Alamo Elementary and began teaching Bilingual Students until 2001. In 2001, I completed my second Master’s Degree in School Administration and began to work as an Assistant Principal for GISD. I worked for GISD until 2004. From 2004 until the summer of 2008, I was employed as an Assistant Principal with Clear Creek ISD at Stewart Elementary which became a National Blue Ribbon School in 2008. I returned to GISD in August of 2008 as the Assistant Principal at Morgan Elementary. I was named Principal of Early Childhood University and Weis Middle School in the Spring of 2010. Early Childhood University was awarded a Magnet Grant in the Summer of 2010. In the Fall of 2014 Burnet Elementary was reopened and Early Childhood University was moved from the Weis building to Burnet Elementary where I continue to serve as Principal. I am currently serving my 12th year of being a Principal with GISD.
Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year at Burnet Elementary STREAM Magnet! I am extremely honored to be serving as the principal of this wonderful school! It is my hope that as the year progresses you will get to know the staff and the programs we offer here at Burnet. It is the goal of the staff to work with you to create a rich learning environment for all students. Student success is a shared responsibility between the school staff, students and parents.
Burnet Elementary is a Pre-K through fourth grade elementary school located on Ave S and 55th Street in Galveston.

Principal of Burnet Elementary School
After graduating from high school in a small Tennessee town, I went to Middle Tennessee State University with a degree in Elementary Education as well as English literature. I did my student teaching as well as my first year teaching at Carol Morgan School in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. I returned to the states and taught elementary school in New Jersey and Boston, MA. After living in Boston for three years, we moved to Galveston. While living in Galveston I taught elementary school at Rosenberg Elementary for three years then I taught at Oppe for sixth years. We moved to Colorado where I taught middle school and went to school for my Master degree at Adam State University. After receiving my degree in administration, I worked as an Assistant Principal. After ten years in Colorado, my family and I returned to Galveston eight years ago. I have worked as an Assistant Principal as well as a Campus Facilitator at Scott/Collegiate. This is my first year at Burnet as an Assistant Principal.
I am very excited to be at Burnet and feel a real connection to the school and to the community. Burnet is a very strong school and I am very proud to call myself a Burnet Pirate!
Degrees and Certifications:
M.Ed. Technology Leadership. Lamar University.
Bachelor in Mass Communications. Universidad Catolica Andres Bello - Venezuela
EC-4 Bilingual Generalist
My name is Paola Pernalette and this is my fourth year at Burnet as the Collaborative Learning Leader. I have been in Galveston ISD for 17 years, 13 of those years in the classroom working with bilingual students at different grade levels.
I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication, Advertisement, and Broadcasting from Universidad Católica Andrés Bello in Venezuela. I also have a Master's degree in Technology Leadership from Lamar University.
Education has always been very important in my life. I had the opportunity to be raised in a family where both parents were professionals and instilled in me the importance of learning through all the circumstances in life and sharing my experiences with the people I knew. Being a bilingual person and knowing that a teacher can influence the lives of others, made me want to work with English Language Learners to help them adjust and embrace American education.
I enjoy spending time with my family, going on trips, doing Strong® and Zumba®, and watching soccer games.

Hello! I am so excited to be joining the Burnet Elementary STREAM family this year! Although it will be my 11th year in education, the 2019-2020 school year will be my first year working outside of the classroom as Burnet’s STREAM Magnet Coordinator. I absolutely cannot wait to share all the exciting things we have planned for our campus this year with you.
When I am not at school, I love spending time with my husband and our two pups (Harley and Pepper) at our home on the island. We really enjoy taking in all Galveston has to offer and can often be found relaxing at the beach or taking a stroll around town. I also enjoy reading and always seem to have a book (or two!) close at hand.
Please feel free to reach out to me via phone or email with any questions about our STREAM magnet theme!
